De Appel is a center for contemporary art in Amsterdam. It was founded in 1975 and offers a stage for research and presentation of visual arts. Exhibitions, performances and other activities take place in de Appel. The internationally oriented center shows work by artists who are sometimes little known. Since 1994, de Appel has also offered an intensive course, called ‘The Curatorial Programme’ and from 2012 a new professional development programme: the Gallerist programme. This programme was the first practice-oriented educational course for (aspiring) gallery owners and (young) art professionals who wanted to deepen their curatorial and business competencies in the commercial segment of the art world.
