Artist and fashion designer Bas Kosters stayed in Japan for two and a half months and when he returned to Amsterdam he suddenly saw his home city in a new light. ‘I noticed how little we are actually allowed to do here. The city has a so-called policy of discouragement that makes it difficult to enjoy hanging out in the city. The city centre has been made completely hooligan proof. For example, Centraal Station has very few benches where people can just relax and watch the world go by.’
